New Online Petition to the Governement Of Canada

Dear Friends
The NWMO is planning to select a site for creating a Deep Geological Repository for all of Canada's high level radioactive nuclear spent fuel waste in 2024

Protect our Waterways No Nuclear Waste and We the Nuclear Free North have  launched a new on line petition ( parlimentary Petition e-4852 ) to the federal government. Open until May 3rd for signatures. The petition calls upon the Government of Canada to require the Nuclear Waste Management Organization to demonstrate that it has the consent of residents and communities, including First Nations and Treaty Organizations, along the transportation route and in the region of and downstream of the candidate repository site(s) before selecting a site for their proposed deep geological repository for the burial of all of Canada's high-level nuclear waste.   We are hoping that the petition to the Government of Canada will be presented to parliament prior to the summer break.

WHY IS OUR PETITION ASKING FOR THIS?

The NWMO persistently says that they will only proceed with their plan to transport, bury and then abandon all of Canada's high-level nuclear waste in a single location if they have an "informed and willing host". But they are not asking all those who live along the transportation route, or downstream, or in the next town or village if THEY are "willing".

This petition to the federal government asks that the Government REQUIRE the NWMO to demonstrate that they have the consent of those who live downstream and those who live along the transportation route before they select their preferred site.
